Technology Options for Infrastructure

Industry officials are calling for the new administration to act swiftly on a stimulus plan for infrastructure work.

Ken Simonson, chief economist, Associated General Contractors of America, www.agc.org, Arlington, Va., points to a high level of job losses in construction—particularly in the heavy/highway sector—as one driving factor.

“Many of those (job) losses have been in heavy and civil engineering construction—highways and other public works,” says Simonson. “Those workers could quickly be re-employed if the states had enough money to award contracts for projects they have ready to go. Contrary to some assertions, this money would quickly make its way into the economy, supporting equipment and materials manufacturing and services jobs as well as construction. State officials say they have thousands of projects ready to award without long delays.

“AGC urges Congress to act this month on a stimulus package that includes funding for highway, bridge and other infrastructure work,” he adds. “In addition, the new Administration and Congress should give a high priority to renewing long-term highway, airport, water and wastewater funding bills next year.”

Of course, as new work gets awarded contractors in this sector need to be prepared with the proper tools—namely technology. There are many new applications on the market designed to help streamline field processes and add efficiency on the job.

One product designed for heavy/highway contractors is BID2WIN Software, www.bid2win.com, Portsmouth, N.H., a Windows-based application with a Microsoft SQL Server database that can support many users. The company announced the release of BID2WIN 2009.

According to the company, this new product is “feature-packed” with capabilities such as estimate attachments moving templates from one database to another finding and replacing cost components and modifying an estimate within an open estimate.

BID2WIN Software also recently announced the release of the newest version of BUILD2WIN Field Tracking, allowing jobsite managers to track production quantities, labor hours, equipment hours, and material quantities. New features include Microsoft Server 2008 compatibility, integration between BID2WIN to BUILD2WIN, field logs for the approval process, and new warnings for unused employees and equipment in field log.
